Abstract
Metal cutting is a primary activity in the manufacturing industry that produces components with complex shapes and high accuracy. The principle of metal cutting involves a cutting tool making contact with the workpiece to remove material in the form of chips. The objectives of this research include obtaining the hardness values of the tool before and after carburizing, determining the wear rate, and the tool life under various cutting parameters. The research method uses an experimental approach with variations in cutting speed (Vc) (30, 50, and 70 m/min). The results of the study show that the hardness of the tool before heat treatment averages 70.3 HRA, and the tool after heat treatment has a hardness of 72.7 HRA, approaching the hardness of HSS tools, which averages 80 HRA. The flank wear (Vb) at a cutting speed of 30 m/min averages 0.11 mm, at 50 m/min averages 0.12 mm, and at 70 m/min averages 0.11 mm.The conclusion of this study is that lathe tools made from leaf spring material that have undergone the carburizing process are suitable for machining processes because the wear produced is still far from the maximum limit of Vb 0.3 mm. The most effective cutting speed is 70 m/min, as it results in lower wear compared to cutting speeds of 30 and 50 m/min.
