Abstract

The traditional drying process of areca nut seeds is time-consuming, requires a large space, and is highly dependent on sunlight. Therefore, a solar-powered areca nut seed drying oven was designed to address these challenges. The oven uses a heater as a heat source and solar panels as a power source, enabling drying to be carried out at night or during cloudy weather. The design process includes conceptual design, oven construction, solar panel installation, and testing phases. Observations were made at temperatures of 50°C, 60°C, and 70°C with an initial seed weight of 8 kg, targeting a moisture reduction of 12-14%. The test results show that this oven effectively reduces the moisture content of the seeds at an optimal temperature of 70°C over ±10 hours, achieving a moisture reduction of 14%, equivalent to 6.88 kg. This design introduces the use of solar energy as an alternative power source for areca nut seed drying, enhancing drying efficiency and quality while reducing dependency on weather conditions and conventional energy sources.
