Abstract
This research is conducted to investigate the influence of variation in temperature and oil quenching media on the Rockwell hardness of AISI 1040 and AISI 1042 steel with a thickness of 10 mm in the heat treatment process. The heat treatment process is widely used to increase the hardness and add carbon elements to steel that has low hardness and needs special treatment to increase its hardness. The research method used is an experimental method. This study uses oil quenching media with SAE W10-30. In this study, the heat treatment process uses temperature variations of 700, 800, and 900 °C and a holding time of 10 minutes. The highest increase in hardness occurs at a temperature of 900°C in the heat treatment process on AISI 1040 steel, which is 77.25 HRC to 96.45 HRC with an increase of 19.2 HRC or an average increase of 24.85%. The lowest increase in hardness value is at temperatures of 700 and 800°C in the heat treatment process on AISI 1042 steel, which is 85.1 HRC to 91.75 HRC with an increase of 6.65 HRC or an average increase of 7.81%.
