Abstract

Lemongrass essential oil is an essential oil that is very important and widely used. The fragrant aroma of citronella essential oil is widely used in soaps, detergents, and others. As a good source of citral compounds, citronella oil is also used for flavoring in the food industry. To process citronella oil into essential oils, equipment in the form of a distillation machine is needed, one of which is a condenser. The condenser is a heat exchanger that functions as the final stage of distillation by converting hot steam into liquid through the condensate or condensation process. The condenser is used by using a cross flow system or often called cross flow, namely a heat exchanger where usually in the heat exchanger heat transfer occurs between two fluids that are perpendicular to each other. Guenther (1990) states that distillation is carried out based on the difference in vapor pressure of each mixture. The purpose of this study was to design and manufacture a condenser with a capacity of 100 kg and the value of the water flow rate in the citronella distillation condenser on the quantity of essential oil produced. The results showed that the condenser design used for the condensation process of citronella oil resulted in a condenser using A283 carbon steel material with shell dimensions of 80 cm, height of 120 cm and stainless steel 304 spiral pipe material with a diameter of 1 inch producing the largest quantity of water and citronella oil. ie 29850 ml/process at a rate of 10 liters/minute.
