Abstract

Alternative energy sources to substitute fossil-based energy is expected, as the fossil energy reserves decreasing every day. Mud is considered to be economical as the material sources for producing the electricity where it could be found easily and abundantly in Indonesia. The existence of a lot of mud that contains organic material has great potential as a source of electrical energy using microbial fuel cells (MFCs). Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are devices that use bacteria as the catalysts to oxidize organic and inorganic matter with anaerobic process for generating bioelectrocity. Electrons produced by the bacteria from these substrates are transferred to the anode and followed to the cathode linked by a conductive material containing a resistor. It provides a promising technology by degrading organic compounds to yield the sustainable energy. The purpose of this research is to study how the potential of electrical energy can be generated from the utilization of mud. Calculating the feasibility analysis of power plants for the standards that have been set. Utilizing the natural potential in the form of bacterial cells in the mud as an alternative renewable power plant.
