Abstract

In the field of manufacturing and materials engineering, the use of coolant is one of the important factors that affect surface quality in the turning process. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of various types of coolant, namely a combination of vegetable oil and engine oil and a combination of radiator, Coolant and liquid soap on the surface roughness of ST37 steel in the turning process using a conventional lathe. The test data were processed using one-way ANOVA analysis (One-Way) with the help of software Microsoft Excel to determine whether there is a significant influence between the type of cooling media on the surface roughness value. Based on the analysis results obtained F-count value of 0.66 with p-value of 0.43 (p> 0.05), which indicates that the type of cooling media does not have a significant influence on the surface roughness of ST 37 steel. However, practically, a mixture of radiator water with liquid soap produces a slightly lower surface roughness value than a mixture of vegetable oil with engine oil. Thus, a mixture of radiator water and liquid soap can be a more economical alternative cooling media, without significantly reducing the quality of the surface results compared to the use of vegetable oil and engine oil.
