Abstract

The development of metal casting technology in Indonesia has progressed rapidly, driven by growing industrial demands and the need for efficient manufacturing methods. In this context, the design of an aluminum melting furnace presents a strategic solution, particularly in vocational education environments such as the State Polytechnic of Bengkalis. This study aims to design and construct a crucible-type melting furnace fueled by coal, with a melting capacity of 10 kg of aluminum. The furnace is built using a steel frame and lined with fire-resistant cement to withstand high temperatures. Basic design calculations include combustion chamber volume and heat transfer through conduction. Coal was selected as the fuel due to its high calorific value and wide availability. The final result demonstrates that the furnace can reach the necessary temperature to melt aluminum (approximately 660°C) and serves effectively as a practical teaching tool for mechanical engineering students to understand metal casting processes and material properties. Furthermore, the design supports sustainable recycling of aluminum waste through an efficient melting process.
