Abstract
Diesel engines play a crucial role as the main power source in various sectors, including transportation, industry, and heavy machinery, due to their high power output and more fuel-efficient performance compared to gasoline engines. The performance of diesel engines is highly influenced by the cetane number of the fuel, which determines the ignition delay during combustion. In Indonesia, many users still rely on low-cetane fuels such as regular diesel, which can lead to incomplete combustion, higher fuel consumption, and reduced engine efficiency. This issue underlies the need for research on improving cetane numbers through the addition of cetane improver additives. This study aims to compare the performance of diesel engines before and after the addition of cetane improver and to analyze its impact on combustion efficiency. The experimental method was applied using two types of fuel treatments: pure diesel and diesel mixed with cetane improver in three different dosages. Tests were conducted directly on a diesel engine to measure fuel consumption accurately.The results show that fuel consumption decreases with increasing additive dosage. Pure diesel consumed 320 ml/10 minutes, while a 0.20-gram additive reduced consumption to 270 ml/10 minutes. The addition of cetane improver proved to enhance combustion efficiency and optimize engine performance.
