Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of using vegetable coolant on the wear of HSS cutting tools, cutting temperature, and surface roughness in the turning process of AISI 1045 medium carbon steel. The method used was an experiment comparing three types of vegetable coolants (Sunco, Minyakita, and bulk oil) and the conventional Bromus coolant. The test results showed that vegetable coolants performed better than conventional coolants. Sunco cooking oil provided optimal results with the lowest tool wear (0.092 mm), lowest surface roughness (1.56 µm), and most stable cutting temperature (72.4°C). This is due to the high viscosity and natural lubricating ability of vegetable oil, which can reduce friction and maintain thermal stability in the cutting zone. Overall, the use of vegetable oil has proven to be an effective alternative to environmentally friendly coolants that can improve machining process efficiency and support the implementation of green manufacturing concepts in the machining industry.
