Abstract
Damage to road surfaces such as potholes is one of the factors that can increase the risk of accidents and reduce driving comfort. This study develops an IoT-based Automatic Road Pothole Detection System by utilizing an ADXL345 accelerometer sensor and a GPS Neo-7 module to detect vibrations and determine pothole locations in real time. The accelerometer measures changes in acceleration along the X, Y, and Z axes. Based on testing, acceleration values on pothole conditions showed significant fluctuations, such as X = 2,157 and Y = –6,315, X = 0,196 and Y = –7,610, and X = 1,216 and Y = –6,825. In contrast, on flat road conditions the acceleration values were more stable, for example X = –1,922 and Y = –2,667 or X = –2,667 and Y = –1,020. These differences demonstrate the accelerometer’s capability to effectively distinguish variations in road contours. The GPS Neo-7 module is used to obtain pothole coordinates with adequate accuracy. Test results show that the distance error between the actual location and the GPS readings ranges from 4.07 m to 39.71 m, with most values falling between 4–17 m, which is still acceptable for pothole location mapping. Testing indicates a gradual voltage drop from 4,20 V to 3,57 V over 210 minutes, ensuring that the system remains active when the main power supply is disrupted. Overall, the results of accelerometer, GPS, and Mini-UPS testing show that the system is capable of automatically detecting potholes, recording coordinates, and transmitting data in real time with stable and reliable performance.
