Abstract
Road pavement is a form of transportation infrastructure that requires high-quality materials to ensure optimal performance. One approach to improving mix quality while reducing waste is to use styrofoam as a partial substitute for asphalt in Asphalt Concrete–Binder Course (AC-BC) mixtures. This study aims to analyze the effect of styrofoam substitution on the Marshall characteristics and volumetric parameters of AC-BC mixtures in accordance with the 2018 General Specifications of the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing. This study employed a laboratory experimental method, including material characteristic testing, Job Mix Design formulation, determination of the Optimum Asphalt Content (OAC), and Marshall testing for styrofoam substitution levels of 3%, 4%, 5%, 6%, 7%, 8%, 9%, 10%, 11%, and 12% of the asphalt weight. The results indicate that the Optimum Asphalt Content (OAC) is 5.5%. The use of styrofoam affects the Marshall characteristics and the volumetric parameters of the mixture. The most optimal styrofoam substitution rate is 3%, as all parameters meet the 2018 General Specifications of the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing, with a stability value of 1346.40 kg, a flow value of 3.30 mm, a Marshall Quotient (MQ) of 407.64 kg/mm, a VIM of 4.62%, VMA of 15.86%, and VFWA of 70,90%. Meanwhile, at substitution levels above 3%, several volumetric parameters no longer meet the specification requirements.
