Abstract

The management of plastic bottle waste remains a problem because manual shredding requires relatively long processing time and results in suboptimal productivity. Previous studies have developed plastic shredding machines with various capacities and configurations; however, there is still a need for a machine design with higher shredding capacity and integrated strength analysis of the main components. The novelty of this research lies in the design of a single shaft shredder for plastic bottle waste with a capacity of 2 kg/minute, supported by technical analysis of the main components to ensure the safety and feasibility of the design. This research aims to design an effective and efficient plastic bottle waste shredding machine and analyze the power requirements and strength of its main components. The design method consisted of literature study, design concept development, machine design, technical calculations, material selection, and technical drawing development. The calculations included motor power, torque, pulley and belt transmission, shaft, cutting blades, bearings, frame, and bolted and welded joints. The design results produced a machine equipped with a 2 HP electric motor, an initial speed of 1,450 rpm reduced to 550 rpm using an A-type V-belt with 95 mm and 247 mm pulleys, an S45C shaft with a diameter of 35 mm, and 18 cutting blades. The analysis results indicate that the main components are within the allowable stress limits; therefore, the design is considered safe for the intended capacity.
