Abstract

Public street lighting is a crucial infrastructure that supports public safety and comfort, especially at night. However, dependence on electricity supplied by the grid, which is largely still fossil-based, results in high energy consumption and increased costs. Therefore, alternative solutions that are energy-efficient, self-sufficient, and environmentally friendly are needed. This research aims to design and implement a street lighting system using solar panels equipped with an Arduino Uno-based solar tracker to increase solar energy absorption efficiency. This system utilizes solar panels as the primary energy source and integrates a solar tracking mechanism that automatically follows the sun's movement throughout the day. LDR sensors are used to detect sunlight intensity and environmental conditions. Data obtained from the LDR sensors is processed by the Arduino Uno to control the movement of servo motors and automatically turn the street lighting system on and off. The electrical energy generated by the solar panels is stored in batteries via a solar charge controller, enabling the system to operate at night or in low sunlight conditions. This research includes system design, hardware and software development, and performance testing. The designed system can be an efficient, economical, and environmentally friendly street lighting solution.
