Abstract

The process of mixing chemicals into paper pulp is still commonly carried out manually, which may result in non-homogeneous mixtures, inaccurate chemical dosages, longer mixing times, and increased risk of chemical exposure to operators. Previous studies have developed automation systems for paper pulp processing; however, they have not integrated liquid level measurement with the automatic control of multiple chemical dispensing processes using a microcontroller. This study aims to design and develop an Arduino Uno-based automatic chemical mixing system for paper pulp that is capable of controlling the mixing process based on the volume and level of the paper pulp. The research employed the Research and Development (R&D) method, which included needs analysis, mechanical, electronic, and Software system design, prototype development, and system performance Testing. The system consists of an Arduino Uno as the main controller, Ultrasonic sensors for detecting the paper pulp level, servo motors as actuators for opening and closing the chemical valves, and a Power supply with a buck converter to provide electrical power. The design results indicate that all system components operate in an integrated manner, the Ultrasonic sensors are capable of detecting the liquid level as the basis for system control, and the servo motors function according to the programmed logic. The proposed system is expected to improve the efficiency of the chemical mixing process, produce more consistent mixtures, reduce Errors caused by human factors, and enhance occupational safety during the laboratory-scale paper pulp mixing process.
