Abstract

The submersible pump electric motor is a critical component in the paper production process at PT. Indah Kiat Pulp and Paper Perawang Tbk, particularly in the wire section and press section of the paper machine. Continuous 24-hour operation makes the motor susceptible to failures, requiring an effective early fault detection method. This study aims to analyze faults in a 30 kW, 1450 RPM
submersible pump electric motor using a Megger (Insulation Resistance Tester) and a Digital Multimeter. The research employed a quantitative descriptive method with a case study approach, including visual inspection, insulation resistance measurement, winding resistance testing, and operational voltage and current measurements. The results showed that the insulation resistance was below the recommended standard (>100 MΩ), indicating insulation degradation caused by moisture. Winding resistance measurements revealed an imbalance in phase T, indicating a turn-to-turn short circuit, which was supported by overcurrent conditions and visual evidence of brownish marks and condensation inside the motor terminal box. The motor failure was caused by insulation deterioration and a stator winding short circuit. It is recommended to perform motor rewinding or replacement, improve moisture protection in the terminal box, and conduct periodic insulation resistance testing every 3–6 months.
