Abstract

Three-phase induction motors are widely used in industry due to their simple construction and high reliability. However, continuous operation can degrade insulation quality, potentially causing short to ground faults. This study aims to analyze induction motor insulation damage caused by short to ground faults using Insulation Resistance (IR) and Polarization Index (PI) methods at PT. Indah Kiat Pulp and Paper Perawang. Testing was conducted on a 380 V motor using a Digital Insulation Resistance Tester (Megger) at 1000 VDC for 10 minutes. Pre-repair test results showed a PI value of 1.38 (below IEEE 43 standard ≥ 2.0), indicating poor insulation condition. After cleaning and drying, the PI value increased to 2.10, which has met the feasibility standard. This study proves that IR and PI methods are effective for early detection of insulation degradation and for evaluating the success of repair actions
