Abstract
Bengkalis Port is one of the ferry ports with a fairly high number of Ro-Ro ship visits, with an average of around 12 to 15 ships per day based on data from the Bengkalis Regency Transportation Agency (2024). Delays in departure schedules, increased operational costs, and decreased service quality for passengers and vehicles are the impacts of excessively long berthing times. One of the main factors causing the long berthing process is the skill of the ship's captain in operating the ship during berthing and unberthing maneuvers. This study aims to analyze how to speed up the berthing time of Ro-Ro ships at Bengkalis Port. The method used in this study is a quantitative descriptive approach, with data collection carried out through direct observation of four Ro-Ro ships, interviews with four ship's captains (one for each observed vessel) and three key informants from the Bengkalis Port Authority (KSOP), the Transportation Agency (Dishub), and the port operator, and documentation of berthing time data from March to May 2026. The data obtained were analyzed by comparing standard procedures for ship maneuvers in confined waters. The results of the study are expected to show that applications, such as regulating ship speed when approaching the dock, proportional use of rudders and engines, and effective utilization of currents and winds, can have a significant impact in reducing the duration of berthing times. Thus, it is hoped that this will be able to increase operational efficiency and safety at Bengkalis Port.
