Abstract

Ship sanitation is a crucial aspect of maintaining environmental health in maritime transport and preventing the spread of diseases transmitted via the environment or disease vectors. KMP Permata Lestari III, a ferry operating on the Bengkalis–Sei Selari route, experiences high passenger and vehicle turnover, necessitating sanitation practices that meet health standards. This study aims to analyze the implementation of ship sanitation, identify factors influencing this implementation, and formulate measures to improve sanitation on KMP Permata Lestari III. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method with a comparative approach. Data were collected through field observations using a ship sanitation checklist based on the Minister of Health Regulation No. 40 of 2015, in-depth interviews with the captain and crew, and a review of documentation. Data analysis involved data reduction, data presentation, conclusion drawing, and source triangulation. The results indicate that ship sanitation practices are generally satisfactory regarding routine cleaning, particularly in passenger accommodation areas. However, implementation does not yet fully meet sanitation standards due to poorly maintained toilets, inconsistent waste segregation systems, and limited cleaning facilities. Factors influencing sanitation implementation include internal factors—such as the vessel's tight operational schedule, limited sanitation facilities, and delays in the supply of cleaning materials—and external factors, specifically the lack of awareness among some passengers regarding maintaining cleanliness on board. Measures to improve sanitation include providing adequate sanitation facilities, ensuring the regular supply of cleaning materials, strengthening supervision of sanitation practices and logbook record-keeping, and enhancing passenger education through information media and announcements during voyages.
