Abstract

This study aims to determine the level of material degradation, identify the type of corrosion, and calculate the corrosion rate of an excavator bucket operating at the UPT Heavy Equipment Workshop of the Bengkalis Regency Public Works and Spatial Planning Agency (PUPR). The excavator bucket is a primary component of heavy equipment that operates directly in corrosive and abrasive environments, making it highly susceptible to material degradation in the form of thickness reduction and mass loss. The method used in this study was actual thickness measurement using an Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge (UTG), combined with the weight loss method. Based on the measurement and calculation results, the initial bucket thickness of 50.00 mm decreased to 41.00 mm after three years of operation, with a cumulative operating time of 6,300 hours. The analysis results indicate that the dominant type of corrosion was uniform corrosion, which was aggravated by abrasive wear caused by friction with excavated materials. The material mass loss of the bucket was calculated to be 106,588.44 grams, with a corrosion rate of 12.20 mm/year, which is categorized as a high corrosion rate. The results of this study are expected to serve as a basis for the agency in planning preventive maintenance programs, periodic inspections, and component repairs to extend the service life of the excavator bucket.
