Abstract
This study aims to analyze the effect of variations in feed rate on the wear of HSSAl M2 end mill cutters during the milling process of S50C steel using a Milling Machine (Mechanical Process) 1 JTM 12. Milling is one of the machining processes widely used in the manufacturing industry to produce components with good dimensional precision. One of the main problems in the machining process is tool wear, which can affect machining quality, dimensional accuracy, and tool service life. This study employed an experimental method with feed rate variations of 7 mm/min, 12 mm/min, and 23 mm/min, while the other machining parameters were kept constant, namely a spindle speed of 1100 rpm, tool diameter of 10 mm, cutting speed of 34 m/min, and cutting depth of 1.5 mm. Tool wear was evaluated based on flank wear (VB) and measured using a digital microscope at several observation points, followed by calculation of the average wear value. The results showed that the average tool wear at feed rates of 7 mm/min, 12 mm/min, and 23 mm/min was 9.40, 9.23, and 8.80, respectively. Descriptively, increasing the feed rate from 7 mm/min to 23 mm/min resulted in a decrease in the average tool wear of 0.60, or approximately 6.38%. Based on the One-Way ANOVA analysis, the significance value obtained was 0.135, which is greater than the significance level of 0.05. Therefore, the feed rate variations used in this study did not have a statistically significant effect on the flank wear (VB) of the HSS-Al M2 end mill cutter. Under the machining conditions used in this study, the feed rate of 23 mm/min produced the lowest average tool wear. These results can serve as a reference for understanding tool wear characteristics during the milling of S50C steel and as a consideration in selecting feed rate parameters under similar machining conditions.
