Abstract

Leaf spring steel is one of the main components used in vehicle suspension systems and is continuously subjected to dynamic and Impactloading during operation. Therefore, this material must possess good Impacttoughness to absorb Impactenergy without failure. One of the heat treatment methods used to improve the mechanical properties of spring steel is the pack carburizing process. This study aims to evaluate the comparison of the Impacttoughness of leaf spring steel before and after the pack carburizing process and to analyze the effect of three different carbon media, namely coconut shell charcoal, mangrove wood charcoal, and oil palm shell charcoalThis research employed an experimental method. The test material was leaf spring steel prepared according to the ASTM E23 standard for the Charpy Impacttest. The pack carburizing process was carried out at a temperature of 920°C with a holding time of 30 minutes using each carbon medium, followed by oil quenching. Chemical composition analysis, Charpy Impacttesting, and fracture surface observations using a microscope were conducted to evaluate the mechanical behavior of the treated specimensThe results showed that the pack carburizing process affected the Impacttoughness of leaf spring steel. Different carbon media produced different Impacttoughness values due to variations in carbon diffusion into the steel surface during the carburizing process. The use of natural carbon media significantly influenced the material's ability to absorb Impactenergy after heat treatment. Among the carbon media tested, one exhibited better Impacttoughness than the others, indicating its potential as a more effective carburizing medium for improving the performance of leaf spring steel.
