Abstract

Clay and peat soils are classified as soft soils with low bearing capacity and high compressibility, making them susceptible to excessive settlement that may affect structural stability. One alternative to overcome this problem is the use of pile foundations. This study aims to analyze and compare the settlement behavior and bearing capacity of threaded precast concrete mini piles and mangrove timber piles installed in clay and peat soils by considering variations in pile depth, pile configuration (single and group piles), and testing time. An experimental study was conducted using 36 test specimens with pile lengths of 1 m, 2 m, and 3 m. Static loading tests were carried out immediately after pile installation (0 hours) and after a 48-hour waiting period, with the load applied incrementally until the maximum bearing capacity was reached. The results indicate that increasing pile depth, using pile group configurations, and conducting the test after 48 hours resulted in higher bearing capacities than those obtained from immediate testing. In clay soil, the maximum bearing capacity of the threaded precast concrete mini pile reached 795 kg, whereas the mangrove timber pile reached 735 kg. In peat soil, the threaded precast concrete mini pile achieved a maximum bearing capacity of 815 kg, while the mangrove timber pile reached 715 kg. Therefore, threaded precast concrete mini piles exhibited higher bearing capacity and smaller settlement than mangrove timber piles, making them a more effective foundation alternative for construction on clay and peat soils.
