Abstract
The abundance of sago bark waste (Metroxylon sagu) in Meranti Islands, Riau, poses aquatic pollution risks amidst high construction timber demand. The main problem identified is the thin, curved geometry of sago bark and the risk of inter-laminar shear failure. This study aims to analyze the effect of nail peg reinforcement as shear connectors on the physical and mechanical properties of laminated beams and determine the most optimal configuration. The benefit is providing a ductile, eco-friendly, and economical structural building material based on local biomass. Test specimens measuring 760 × 50 × 50 mm consisted of 10 sago bark layers (5 mm/layer) bonded with EFloor Epoxy Resin. Beam variations included unpegged (SL), 10 cm peg spacing (SP10), and 15 cm peg spacing (SP15). Test results showed an average moisture content of 14.97% and a density of 4.83 g/cm³ (Strength Class I). In flexural testing, SP15 achieved the highest performance with a Modulus of Rupture (MoR) of 67.32 MPa (Pmax = 11.65 kN; Strength Class III/Moderate), outperforming SL (44.93 MPa) and SP10 (40.18 MPa) in Class IV. The 15 cm nail peg spacing proved most optimal in maximizing composite action without damaging fiber integrity.
