Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of using Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) spiral stirrups on the shear capacity of reinforced concrete beams. An experimental investigation was conducted using four beam specimens measuring 150 × 250 × 1000 mm with a design concrete compressive strength of 25 MPa, consisting of one control beam reinforced with steel stirrups and three beams reinforced with GFRP spiral stirrups. The specimens were tested under three-point loading until failure. The observed parameters included the maximum load, deflection, crack pattern, and failure mechanism. The results indicate that the use of GFRP spiral stirrups increased the maximum load-carrying capacity compared to the control beam, with the highest recorded load reaching 220.70 kN. Deflection was influenced by the type of longitudinal reinforcement, while all specimens experienced shear failure characterized by dominant diagonal cracks. Therefore, GFRP spiral stirrups have the potential to serve as an alternative to conventional steel stirrups in reinforced concrete structures, particularly for improving corrosion resistance without compromising the shear performance of the beams.
