Abstract
KMP Swarna Putri is a Ro-Ro ferry operating on the Bengkalis–Sungai Pakning route with an operational intensity of approximately 9–11 trips per day. The high operational intensity causes the Start Engine and Cooling System to operate continuously, increasing the potential for failures. Based on historical failure data from 2022–2026, recurring failures were identified, including Air Compressor failures, air system leakage, Valve Assembly failures, radiator leakage, impeller damage, and LO Cooler failures, which can affect the reliability and operation of the vessel. This study aims to identify the factors causing failures, determine appropriate maintenance and repair planning, and optimize the maintenance strategy for the Start Engine and Cooling System of KMP Swarna Putri. The methods used were Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) to identify the root causes of failures and Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) to determine maintenance actions based on failure characteristics. Data were obtained through observations, interviews, documentation, maintenance records, and historical vessel failure data. The results showed that the proposed RCM-based maintenance strategy was able to reduce the RPN values for all failure modes. The Maintenance Optimization Index (IOP) ranged from 50.00% to 80.00%, with the highest value of 80.00% and the lowest value of 50.00%. These results indicate that the proposed maintenance strategy provides a high to very high level of optimization in reducing failure risks and improving system reliability.
