Abstract

A boat trailer is used to transport boats from manufacturing or maintenance facilities to launching areas or storage locations. Based on the condition of the trailer investigated in this study, the existing support system did not provide optimal support for the boat hull, and the load distribution on the frame still required improvement.
This study aims to design modifications to the trailer structure and boat support system for a trailer with a length of 4.5 m, analyze the structural response before and after modification, and evaluate the performance of the modified trailer through simulation and field testing. The primary data used in this study include trailer dimensions of 4.5 m × 1.3 m with a construction height of 0.45 m, a frame mass of 112.2575 kg, a main load of 1,200 kg, and boat specifications consisting of a length overall (LOA) of 5.3 m, a width of 1.4 m, a draft of 0.43 m, and a block coefficient (Cb) of 0.25. The trailer was modeled using AutoCAD/Rhino, while structural analysis was performed using ANSYS Static Structural. The analysis parameters included Equivalent (Von Mises) Stress, Total Deformation, Equivalent Elastic Strain, and Safety Factor. The analysis results show that the frame modification and replacement of the support system with Nylon 6 (PA6) rollers reduced the maximum stress from 234.79 MPa to approximately 180 MPa, representing a reduction of 23.34%. The maximum deformation decreased from 4.8 mm to 2.6 mm, equivalent to a reduction of 45.83%, while the Safety Factor increased from 1.065 to 1.39. Field testing demonstrated that the rollers rotated properly when the boat was pulled onto the trailer, and no significant scratches were observed on the boat hull.
