Abstract

This research aims to address the weaknesses of conventional electric irons that still use a bimetal thermostat, where temperature fluctuations are often unstable and difficult to monitor with precision. Modifications were made by integrating a microcontroller as the central processing unit and a digital temperature sensor to replace the old mechanical mechanism. The system is designed using a PID
(Proportional-Integral-Derivative) control algorithm to regulate the heater's operating cycle through Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) or Phase Angle Control methods. A type-K thermocouple or NTC thermistor sensor is used as a temperature feedback, which is then displayed in real-time on an LCD OLED screen. The test results show that the application of PID control successfully accelerates the time to reach the target temperature (setpoint) with minimal overshoot and is able to maintain temperature stability within an error range of ±1°C to ±2°C. This modification not only enhances temperature accuracy for different types of fabrics but also improves energy efficiency by preventing unnecessary overheating.
