Abstract

In 2024, approximately 12 percent or 33 million people in Indonesia are categorized as elderly, and this number continues to increase annually. Elderly individuals often face physical limitations that increase the risk of falling, which is one of the leading causes of injury and death among them. Continuous monitoring is essential, but it is not always possible for family members to be physically present. Therefore, this study aims to design a prototype of a fall detection system for the elderly using Internet of Things (IoT) technology. The system utilizes the MPU6050 sensor (accelerometer and gyroscope) connected to a NodeMCU ESP8266 microcontroller to read and transmit acceleration and orientation data. The collected data is processed to distinguish between normal daily activities and fall incidents. When a fall is detected, a real-time notification is sent to the family via the Telegram application. Based on the testing results, the system is capable of distinguishing between normal activities (such as standing, walking, and lying down) and falls with good accuracy, and it delivers timely and accurate notifications through Telegram.
