Abstract

Foundation is a crucial structural element that functions to transfer building loads to stronger soil layers. On Bengkalis Island, the use of mangrove wood piles (bakau) is common due to their abundant availability and low cost. However, these piles have significant limitations, such as being prone to decay and having low bearing capacity. This study compares the performance of mangrove wood piles and precast plain mini pile foundations as deep foundation reinforcements. The research problem includes a comparison of both direct and indirect settlements in single and grouped pile configurations. The objective is to determine the differences in settlement and cost efficiency between the two types of piles. The findings aim to provide a basis for selecting a more efficient and environmentally friendly foundation system The research was conducted at the Bengkalis State Polytechnic, using 6 mini piles and 6 mangrove wood piles at depths of 1 m, 1.5 m, and 2 m, as well as grouped piles of 1 m length. Testing was carried out using the Static Load Test (SLT) method. The results showed that the precast plain mini piles had a higher load-bearing capacity compared to the mangrove wood piles. In grouped configurations, the maximum load difference reached up to 140 kg. This indicates that precast plain mini piles are more effective in reducing settlement and offer more stable performance. In addition to their technical advantages, the use of mini piles is more environmentally friendly, as it reduces the need for mangrove wood, which poses a threat to coastal ecosystems. Therefore, precast plain mini piles are recommended as a reliable and sustainable alternative for deep foundations in soft soil areas.
