Abstract
Polbeng II is a research vessel owned by the State Polytechnic of Bengkalis, designed to support marine research activities with a design speed of 12 knots. However, the vessel fails to reach this speed despite being equipped with a 74 HP diesel engine, indicating an engine-propeller mismatch. This study aims to analyze the vessel’s propulsion system using an engine-propeller matching approach, involving engine power calculations, open water propeller diagrams, and Numerik simulations. The results show that at 12 knots, the required power based on Numerik is 15.59 HP, while the engine-propeller matching calculation indicates 18.59 HP. Although both values are well below the available engine power (74 HP), the vessel still fails to achieve the design speed due to the propeller’s inability to absorb power efficiently. Therefore, adjustments to the propeller’s diameter and pitch are necessary to optimize the propulsion system.
