Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the factors causing the evaluation of ship crew navigation equipment proficiency, identify the level of understanding of ship crew skills, and the impact of suboptimal ship crew skills in using navigation equipment at PT. PELINDO 1 Dumai Branch. Total of crew were 10 people from 8 ships operating navigation equipment, namely the Hangtuah, Bima IX, Bima I, Bayu III, Bayu I, Hangtuah VIII, Sea Deli II, Sea Deli IV. The location of this research was conducted at PT. PELINDO 1 Dumai Branch which was carried out from February to July 2025. This research was descriptive qualitative research using data collection, they were observation, questionnaires, interviews, and documentation. The results of this study were: 1) The level of proficiency is satisfactory. The crew has work experience and educational background that is appropriate and certified ANT IV and ANT III. 2) Control was influenced by relationship skills factors, good relationship skills education, appropriate formal education, adequate work experience, and adequate technical skills. 3) Training programs head proven effective in significantly improving crew capabilities. Simulation-based training and hands-on practice on board have proven more effective than theoretical training.
