Abstract

Melinjo is a plant whose seeds are widely used as raw materials for traditional foods, such as emping. The process of manually sorting melinjo seeds takes a lot of time and energy, making it less efficient for large-scale production. This research aims to design and build a melinjo seed shelling device using an electric motor with a rolling system to increase the efficiency and productivity of the sorting process. The system is designed using four peeling rollers driven by an electric motor through a power transmission mechanism. Melinjo beans are fed into the hopper and flattened as they pass through the gaps between the rollers. The main parameters analyzed include motor speed, distance between rollers and the degree of seed damage. The design results show that this tool is able to flatter melinjo seeds automatically and consistently with better time efficiency than the manual method. Thus, this tool is expected to be a practical and economical solution for household industry players and emping processing MSMEs.
