Abstract

Recycled steel possesses substantial potential as a raw material for knife manufacturing. This study aims to analyze the effect of the knife-forming process on the hardness of recycled steel used in knife production. The research
methodology included heat treatment, quenching, and tempering. Hardness testing was performed in accordance with ASTM E18 using the Rockwell C scale to determine changes in hardness values after the forming process. Three types of steel were examined—HSS circle, AISI 5160, and 9260 steel—under identical treatment and processing conditions. The results indicated that the knife-forming process significantly increased hardness in all specimens. HSS exhibited a 19% increase,reaching 20.92 HRC; AISI 5160 demonstrated a 32% increase, reaching 32.19 HRC; and 9260 steel achieved the highest improvement of 47%, reaching 48.14 HRC. These findings reveal that the knife-forming process positively affects surface hardness characteristics, thereby enhancing the wear resistance of the knife blade
compared to its initial condition.
