Abstract

This research aims to analyze the effect of cooling media on the physical properties, especially hardness, of cutting blades made from ASTM A36 steel used in waste shredding machines. The heat treatment process was carried out at 800°C with rapid cooling using water and oil. Hardness testing was performed using the Rockwell C scale method with a load of 150 kgf. The results show that untreated specimens had an average hardness of 82.4 HRC, specimens quenched in oil reached 88.4 HRC, and those quenched in water reached 95.9 HRC. Water quenching resulted in the highest hardness increase of 16.38%. These results indicate that the choice of cooling medium significantly affects the physical properties of steel after the heat treatment process.
