Abstract

The Fajar Pagi cattle group is engaged in cattle farming using a fattening method. The group’s main revenue comes from selling cattle for the annual Eid al-Adha celebration. To increase income, the group aims to develop compost production from cattle manure as an effort to utilize livestock waste, improve soil fertility, and reduce environmental pollution. Efficient and effective compost processing is one of the key factors in supporting sustainable agriculture. However, the resulting compost often has a non-uniform texture, requiring a screening process to separate coarse and fine particles in compost ready for use.This study aims to design and build a compost soil screening machine to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of compost screening from cattle manure. The machine is designed with a rotary mechanism using a cylindrical screen equipped with a mesh layer. The research method includes needs analysis, mechanism design, and prototype testing. The machine is designed with a capacity of 250 kg/hour, dimensions of 2.1 m in length, 0.87 m in width, and 0.9 m in height, with a mesh size of 2 mm. The driving system uses a 1 HP electric motor, reduced with a 1:20 gearbox, and transmitted to the shaft via a chain drive. The final machine speed after reduction is 30 rpm. The screening results have a particle size of 2 mm, and the final output can be directly collected into a storage container (sack). The test results show that the machine has a maximum capacity of 80 kg per screening cycle. The expected outcome of this research is a compost screening machine prototype that meets user needs in terms of efficiency, reliability, and ease of use, thereby supporting increased agricultural productivity while maintaining environmental sustainability.
