Abstract

This study covers the influence of three types of blade materials (L6 steel, SUP 9 steel, and ASTM A36 steel plate) which are hardened using oil as the quenching medium, on the hardness and chopping speed of a palm frond chopper machine. The tests measured the chopping process speed and the hardness values of the three types of blade materials. The chopper machine was operated at a constant speed of 1100 rpm, with a palm frond load of 50 kg per test. The results
showed that the blade made of L6 steel was the most effective, requiring only 9 minutes to chop 50 kg of palm fronds, producing the finest chopped size ranging from 2–5 cm, and achieving a hardness value of 71 HRC after being hardened using oil as the quenching medium.
