Abstract
Road infrastructure in coastal areas frequently experiences premature distress due to seawater inundation caused by tidal floods, as observed on Patimura Street, Dumai City. This study aims to analyze the effect of variations in seawater immersion duration on the characteristics of Asphalt Concrete - Wearing Course (AC-WC) mixtures using the Marshall testing method. The materials used include 60/70 penetration asphalt, coarse and fine aggregates from Tanjung Balai Karimun, and Portland cement as filler. All base materials were pre-tested and declared to comply with the 2018 Bina Marga General Specifications. Based on laboratory testing results, the Optimum Asphalt Content (OAC) was determined to be 5.5%, as it met all technical parameters with a stability value of 1276.72 kg. Seawater immersion testing was conducted at the OAC condition with duration variations of 1 day, 7 days, and 50 days. The results indicated that exposure to seawater significantly degraded the performance of the asphalt mixture over time. Stability values decreased from 2904.28 kg on day 1 to 2534.01 kg on day 50, while the flow value increased from 2.7 mm to 3.8 mm. The increase in voids in the total mixture (VITM) up to 5.18% indicated that the asphalt structure softened and became more porous. Although the Marshall parameters still met the minimum specification limits, the declining trend in stability proves that seawater accelerates asphalt degradation. Therefore, road design in coastal areas requires optimal drainage systems and more adaptive asphalt materials.
