Abstract

Turning is one of the most widely used machining processes in the manufacturing industry for producing components with specific dimensional accuracy and surface quality. One of the important factors affecting the machining process is tool condition, particularly tool wear that occurs during cutting. This study aims to analyze the wear level of carbide cutting tools during the turning process of Aluminium 6061 and to determine the factors affecting tool wear and tool service life. The research method used was an experimental method using a conventional lathe. The workpiece material was Aluminium 6061, while a carbide cutting tool was used as the cutting tool. The cutting parameters were maintained at a cutting speed of 150 m/min, spindle speed of 750 rpm, feed rate of 0.208 mm/rev, depth of cut of 1.5 mm, and tool angle of 95°. The turning process was performed in nine experimental runs using the same carbide tool. Tool wear was evaluated based on flank wear (VB), which was measured using a digital microscope and analyzed using ImageJ software.The results showed that flank wear increased gradually with the repeated use of the carbide cutting tool. The average flank wear increased from 0.040 mm in Run 1 to 0.077 mm in Run 9. This increase indicates that continuous contact and friction between the cutting tool and Aluminium 6061 caused progressive wear on the flank surface. Since the cutting parameters were kept constant, the increase in tool wear was mainly influenced by the duration and repeated use of the cutting tool. The maximum measured wear of 0.077 mm was still below the tool wear limit of 0.300 mm based on ISO 3685. Therefore, the carbide cutting tool was still considered suitable for use at the end of the testing process.
