Abstract

The unloading of bagged fertilizer is a crucial port operation aimed at transferring cargo from vessels to warehouses safely, quickly, and efficiently. However, the process still faces various obstacles that can impact productivity and service quality. This study aims to examine the bagged fertilizer unloading process at Pier A of PT. Pelindo Multi Terminal, Dumai Branch, identify the factors hindering operations, and analyze strategies to minimize these obstacles. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, utilizing data collection techniques such as observation, document review, and interviews with operational staff. The findings indicate that the unloading process encompasses hatch opening, cargo condition inspection, equipment and workforce preparation, the unloading operation itself, supervision, final inspection, hatch cleaning, and administrative finalization. Identified obstacles include weather conditions, loading/unloading equipment malfunctions, damage to fertilizer packaging, workforce skill levels, and issues regarding communication and coordination. Strategies to minimize these obstacles include enhancing operational coordination, conducting regular equipment maintenance, improving workforce competence, strengthening communication and supervision, and implementing weather protection for the cargo. Implementing these strategies is expected to boost unloading productivity and service efficiency at Pier A of PT. Pelindo Multi Terminal, Dumai Branch.
