Abstract
This study focuses on developing an alternative data storage solution using a Set Top Box (STB) powered by Linux Armbian as a cost-effective replacement for conventional Network Attached Storage (NAS). Low-cost STBs are configured into NAS servers supporting centralized data storage, management, and remote access. The system is designed through the installation and configuration of Armbian on the STB, network integration with ZeroTier Virtual Private Network (VPN), and integration with a Virtual Private Server (VPS) to enable collaboration and online data backup. System performance was evaluated based on data transfer speed, multi-user access capability, and data security and integrity. The evaluation results indicate that STB-based NAS fulfills the requirements for adequate data transfer speed and flexible accessibility while enhancing security through encryption and authentication. Additionally, this solution significantly reduces operational and procurement costs compared to traditional NAS, making it suitable for educational institutions and small to medium-sized organizations with limited budgets. This study demonstrates that low-cost hardware and open-source software can be utilized to create a cost-effective, robust, and scalable data storage system.
