Abstract

The use of steel wire mesh in concrete floor slabs is common due to its good tensile strength and ease of application. However, steel reinforcement is susceptible to corrosion, which can reduce structural performance and service life. As an alternative, Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) is increasingly used because of its corrosion resistance, lightweight properties, and high tensile strength. This study aims to compare the flexural behavior of normal-strength concrete floor slabs reinforced with GFRP and steel wire mesh based on flexural capacity, deflection, and crack patterns at 28 days. The research employed an experimental method involving flexural testing of reinforced concrete slab specimens. The specimens measured 1300 mm × 700 mm × 100 mm with a design concrete strength of 25 MPa. Reinforcement variations consisted of D8 GFRP wire mesh, D8 steel wire mesh, D10 steel, and D13 steel reinforcement. Static loading was applied until failure. The observed parameters included flexural capacity, maximum deflection, and crack patterns. The results showed that reinforcement type affected slab flexural behavior. D13 steel produced the highest flexural capacity, while D8 GFRP had lower capacity than larger-diameter steel. GFRP slabs experienced greater deflection due to their lower modulus of elasticity. Thus, GFRP wire mesh has potential as an alternative to steel reinforcement, particularly in high-corrosion environments.
