Abstract
This study aims to determine the hardness value or number of slag hammer carbon steel for each specimen in the carburizing process and to determine the comparison of the variation of charcoal in the carburizing process which has the highest influence on the hardness level of the specimen. The carburizing process is widely used to increase the hardness value of steel that has a low hardness value and needs to be given special treatment to increase the hardness of the steel. In this study the carburizing media used were coconut shell charcoal, tamarind wood charcoal, mangrove wood charcoal, rubber wood charcoal, and punak wood charcoal. In this study, the carburizing process was carried out with charcoal variations at a temperature of 900°C after reaching the desired temperature and then held for 2 hours. So the lowest hardness value is found in rubber wood charcoal carburizing media, which is 57.76 HRA from 47.62 HRA with an increase of 10.14 HRA or an average increase of 21.2%. And the highest hardness value was found in the carburizing medium for mangrove charcoal using carburizing media for mangrove charcoal, which was 83.25 HRA from 47.91 HRA with an increase of 35.34 HRA or an average increase of 73.7%.
