Abstract

This research aims to analyze the effect of variations in spindle speed, type of coolant, tool holder angle, and feed motion on the surface roughness of St60 carbon steel in the turning process. Experiments were carried out using a lathe at various spindle speeds of 325 rpm, 500 rpm and 813 rpm, as well as air, cutting oil and water cooling. The tool holder angle variations used are 10°, 15°, and 20°, while the variations in feed motion applied are 0.19 mm/put, 0.23 mm/put, and 0.29 mm/put with a cutting depth of 2 mm. The research results show that a higher spindle speed produces a smoother surface. The use of cutting oil as a coolant produces lower surface roughness compared to air and water cooling. The tool holder angle and feeding motion also influence the surface roughness results, where the tool holder angle of 20° and the feeding motion of 0.23 mm/put produce the smoothest surface. The lowest surface roughness value achieved was 1.96 µm at a spindle speed of 500 rpm, air cooling, tool holder angle of 20°, and feed motion of 0.23 mm/put.
