Abstract

In metallurgy and materials science, annealing is a heat treatment process that alters the physical properties of a material, such as strength, hardness, and machinability. Annealing involves heating the material above its recrystallization temperature, holding it at an appropriate temperature for a certain period, and then slowly cooling it down. The purpose of this research is to compare the values of different spindle speeds (rpm) and heat treatment temperatures to determine which combination results in the lowest and highest surface roughness on the specimens. The data collection method used in this research is experimental and minitab(anova), focusing entirely on the variables that affect the heat treatment process on low carbon steel and spindle speed during turning. The lowest surface roughness was observed at a spindle speed of 600 rpm and a temperature of 600°C, with a roughness value of5. 17 μm. The highest surface roughness was observed at a spindle speed of 200 rpm and a temperature of 900°C, with a roughness value of 10.63 μm.
