Abstract

In the maritime industry, the operational efficiency of barges is crucial as they rely on tugboats for movement. The hull shape significantly impacts the resistanc of the vessel. His research compares the resistance of barges with three different hull shapes: radius bilge, chine bilge, and box-shaped (box).. One crictical factor in towing operations is the tugboats towing capacity (bollard pull), which mush
exceed the load of the barge being towed. The analysis was conducted using maxsurf resistance software and manual calculations based on the Korean
register. Simulation results showed that at a maximum speed of 8,6 knots, tge resistance for radius bilge barge was 899,8 KN, the chine bilge barge was 898,8 KN, and the box-shaped barge was 907,7 KN. Additionally, resistance reduction using skegs yielded a results of 892 KN. The barge load calculations revealed thet at a service speed of 5,7 knots, the total load for the radius bilge barge wa 37,820
tons, the chine bilge barge was 37,784 tons, and the box shaped barge was 38,242 tons.
Compared to the tugboats bollard pull of 23 tons, all barge loads exceeded this capacity at 5,7 knots. Therefore, towing can only be performed at speeds below 5 knots.
