Abstract
The need for clean water is increasing, especially incoastal areas such as the Meranti Islands, which have limited access to freshwater sources. This research aims to design andbuild a Fresh Water Maker (FWM) based on thesteamdistillation method to convert seawater into freshwater on a small scale. The designed system consists of a heating element, a storage tank, a condensation pipe, and a distillation water tank. The heating process uses a DC electrical element to evaporate the seawater, which is then condensed into freshwater. Testing was carried out by monitoring electrical power, water production, and temperature over a certain time period. The test results showed that the device was able to produce 1000 ml of freshwater in 150 minutes with an average power consumption of 2.5 kWh. The Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) value from the distillation results was recorded at 45 ppm, indicating that the water is suitable for daily use except drinking. Comparison between the results of theoretical analysis and actual measurements showed an average deviation of 15–22%. This study concludes that the designed FWM device functions well to meet the clean water needs of smallscale households and can be further developed using alternative energy sources such as solar panels to increase efficiency and sustainability.
