Abstract
This study aims to analyze the effect of machining parameters in the turning process on the surface roughness of AISI 1045 steel during pump shaft manufacturing. The tested parameters include spindle rotational speed, depth of cut, and feed rate using the Taguchi method and L27 (3³) orthogonal array experimental design. Surface roughness measurements were carried out using a Surface Roughness Tester on several turned specimens. The results showed that spindle speed is the most dominant parameter affecting surface roughness with a contribution of 44% and a significance level (p-value) of 0.002. Depth of cut and feed rate had lesser and statistically insignificant effects. Increasing the spindle speed to 755 rpm, with a depth of cut of 1 mm and feed rate of 0.162 mm, produced the lowest surface roughness value of Ra 0.877 μm. This study contributes to the optimization of turning parameters to improve the surface quality of AISI 1045 steel pump shafts, thereby enhancing the product's durability and performance.
