Abstract
The western coastal region of Sumatra is a strategically important part of Indonesia's maritime territory as it directly borders the open sea, namely the Indian Ocean. Sibolga, a coastal area located on the western coast of Sumatra, serves as one of the central hubs for fish production in this region. Sibolga's waters possess substantial fishery potential, yet the local fishing fleet remains dominated by vessels designed for only a single type of fishing gear. Therefore, there is a need to develop a multipurpose fishing vessel along with its fishing equipment. The advantage of this vessel over others lies in its ability to operate year-round, equipped with three types of fishing gear: gill nets, traps (bubu), and pole and lines (handlines). The vessel's dimensions, principal data, fishing gear specifications, and preliminary calculations were determined using ship design methods, specifically the Iterative Design Approach (trial and error), to establish the main dimensions based on a gross tonnage (GT) of 30, resulting in Lpp = 17.6 m, B = 4.8 m, H = 1.9 m, T = 1.2 m, and Vs = 7 knots. Using these principal dimensions, the vessel's lines plan and general arrangement were then designed.
