Abstract

The water jet propulsion system is an alternative to conventional propellers that provides better maneuverability, safer operation in shallow waters, and reduced risk of damage from underwater obstacles. This research focuses on the design and implementation of a simple and applicable water jet propulsion system for a knock-down fiberglass boat with dimensions of 5 meters in length and 1.28 meters in width. The ship resistance was analyzed using the Savitsky Planing method to determine the required power. The results show that an effective power of 10.26 HP is needed to achieve a target speed of 4–6 knots, leading to the selection of a 10 HP four-stroke gasoline engine. The manufactured system includes the intake, impeller, nozzle, shaft, and steering mechanism using fiberglass and local mechanical components. Sea trials indicate that the system performs well, allowing the boat to reach 5–6 knots with good maneuverability. This design proves suitable for small vessels operating in shallow waters and supports practical learning in marine engineering.
