Abstract

This study aims to determine the pilot performance process in berthing and unberthing activities at Teluk Bayur Port, the factors that influence pilot performance and how pilots
prevent the risk of accidents. The berthing and unberthing processes are very important in port operations because they affect how efficiently and safely ships navigate. This study
was conducted at the Subholding Pelindo Jasa Maritim unit Teluk Bayur, Padang, West Sumatra. Data collection was done through direct observation and interviews. The results of the study indicate that the pilot performance process at Teluk Bayur Port involves good planning, coordination, and implementation so that ships can operate safely and efficiently. Some of the main factors that influence pilot performance are weather conditions and ship type. To reduce the risk of accidents, pilots implement careful planning before the ship enters the port and delay ship movements if the weather is very bad. In conclusion, this study shows that good pilot performance, supported by a deep understanding of local conditions and the implementation of strict safety procedures, is very important to maintain
the smooth and safe operation at Teluk Bayur Port.
